Spanish product designer Hector Serrano creates an amazing example of decor as fine modern art. Hector created the aptly named “Top Secret” lamp (pictured below) from acetate that had been passed through a shredding machine which had been used to destroy confidential documents, hence the name, “Top Secret”. Clever and beautiful.

1stDibs.com is where we gleefully click when we fantasize about decorating our fabulous imaginary (for now) mansions with the worldly treasures that abound at 1Dibs. Why don’t you join us in Fantasy Decorating and Design and head over to 1stDibs to create your very own dream home?
A little taste of what awaits you at 1stDibs is the “Crystal Snowflake Chandelier” (pictured below) made in Italy circa the swinging ’60s. This beauty is made of crystal, nickel and finished with polished nickel hardware.
One little warning before we send you off, 1stDibs is addictive (in a good way).
Editor Note: Style Divas Best of The Web is now Decorating Divas Best of the Web. Style Divas has been spun off into a new media venture, Style Divas Network, which will debut Summer 2008. Stay tuned for details!
Ice Sculptures You Can Make At Home
Ice sculptures are beautiful but they can be expensive, some starting at $100. Now you can have the beauty of ice sculptures for a fraction of the price by doing it yourself. Our favorite ice mold comes from European Garden and we think it makes a spectacular Ice Lantern that will be a hit at any party. Whether you buy your ice sculpture molds from European Garden, some other vendor or use your own plastic container – the process is the same and it’s so easy, just follow the instructions below:
- What You Need:
- Distilled Water ( for clear ice sculpture)
- Ice Molds or Freezer safe plastic container
- Florals, Glitter, Party Favors (anything you want to “Float” in the ice sculpture)
- Food Color (if you want to add color)
- Votives – if creating Ice Lanterns
Clean the mold or container to remove any impurities.
Stage the freezer area where the mold will “sit”. Make sure that the mold will be level in the freezer(if it’s not make it level) and that there is enough room for the mold.
Fill the mold to about 90% of it’s capacity with the distilled water. This will allow the ice room to expand. (If you are using food coloring – mix it in the distilled water before adding it to the mold).
Add glitter, florals or party favors.
Freeze for 48 hours.
Remove mold from freezer, turn it upside down and let the ice melt for a few minutes before attempting to remove the sculpture. The ice sculpture should slip out easily.
Place ice sculpture on a cookie sheet, plate or bowl to catch melting water.

NOTE: For very clear ice use distilled water (no minerals) and then boil the distilled water to remove air bubbles. This method does take a bit longer but the ice will be much more transparent than using distilled water alone.
