Choosing The Best Flooring For Your Child's Room

Two primary factors to consider when selecting flooring for your young child’s room are: safety and durability. Safety is a critical element as young children do fall and a hard surface can lead to injury. And durability is a must as the flooring needs to endure toys, drinks, food and other items being dropped or spilled on it. To a lesser degree you should also consider how easy the flooring material will be to clean.

I recommend buying flooring materials that are resilient such as well sealed woods (no splinters or cracks), laminates, vinyl and linoleum. Personally I prefer cork flooring. Cork is a very cushioning flooring material and as a result I recommend it to parents of young children. The upside of using Cork is that it is a “Green” sustainable material with natural anti-bacterial properties so it’s good for the planet and great for your little one’s room. Bamboo is another great flooring choice.

I don’t recommend carpet in a young child’s room or a baby’s nursery. Carpets have a tendency to attract dust and pet dander which can be harmful to your child’s respiratory health.

Hard flooring such as tiles and stones really should not be used in a child’s room.

Wall Art for Trendy Decorating Divas

While researching wall surface alternatives to wallpaper I found an unbelievably hip and trendy e-store that sells wall graphics called Blick Surface Graphics.

My favorite is the Iron Vines in mint – it has a timeless classical quality yet it’s still very trendy. Love it – now I’ve got to figure out how to work it into my design scheme!

If you’re like me and would like to see the product before purchasing then you can head on down to your local Home Depot – they are an authorized retailer of this product.
