First thoughts when you think of Scandinavian minimalist design? Do you immediately conjure a room resplendent in white, with sparse, very modern furnishings that embody function over form and maybe, a little on the cold side visually? That is what many people think when asked to define Scandinavian minimalist style. The reality is that there are so many versions of warm and inviting Scandinavian designs that embrace the iconic style of minimalism while still conveying the critical importance of function over form for which the Scandinavian countries are so famous for – yet these designs are also so incredibly warm, full of charm, and personality and, in some cases, lots of glamour.
I’ve created three lookbooks that illustrate my interpretation of Scandinavian Minimalism in bedroom design – with the focus on one of the most enduring and iconic pieces that has long come to symbolize the very essence of Scandinavian design, the Swedish made Hastens mattress and bed.
Scandinavian Style in Bedroom Design
“Scandinavian Past & Present” bedroom design explores the very rich and beautiful history of Scandinavian design throughout time. Mixing celebrated 18th century period pieces with Mid-Century Modern and contemporary furniture and decor to create a layered bedroom design that enchants with it’s beautiful aesthetics, its charismatic tales held in each vintage and antique piece and its nuanced nod to Scandinavian design evident even in the non-Scandinavian pieces such as the painting and decorative pillows.
The “Scandinavian Glam” bedroom design beguiles with its elegant and graceful splendor. Yet, in all its glamour this interpretation of Scandinavian design stays true to form in its restrained use of color and materials, and its adherence to editing an interior to focus on the truly functional. In this lookbook I balanced the need for a design that weds the driving principle of Scandinavian Minimalism – focus on function with the desire for sumptuous, ethereal style.
A neutral color palette, laser-like focus on functionality and a dedicated mission to implement organic materials exemplifies my style interpretation of “Scandinavian Organic Minimalism”. Influenced heavily by mid-century iconic Scandinavian design and style, this bedroom design lookbook captures the essence of minimalism, and lightness without sacrificing warmth and comfort.
Hastens: A Little Tour Behind the Scenes with Me
As you can see from the photo, the many layers of natural material that compromise this mattress. Hastens is renowned for their beds, and has amongst its many fans, a royal following as they are, since 1952, the official supplier of beds to Sweden’s royal court. After, the “sewing a Hastens’ bed” experience as well as trying out the bed, I joined the legion of Hastens’ fans, and promised myself that one day I, too, would own a Hastens bed. It is on the materials list for the dream home my husband and I are planning to build!
