With summer quickly approaching, we are turning our attention to the beautiful world outside of our homes. As we spend more time outdoors, we also desire to make our outdoor spaces as comfortable and beautiful as the interior of our homes. We want to create a special space that we love to retreat to for a respite from the chaotic work week. We want an inviting and stylish place to gather and entertain family and friends for a weekend full of laughter-filled fun and activities.
Decorating an outdoor space, outside of the environmental concerns (if not under-cover and protected from the elements), is really no different than decorating an interior room in your home. As with interior spaces, the outdoor living area can be given a refreshed and updated look by taking note of furniture and decor style trends and color direction and then incorporating some of those features into your space.
While touring the showroom of outdoor furniture and decor manufacturer Woods International, Inc to view the debut of the Scott Living collection (designed by HGTV’s “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott), I took note of four distinct color and design trends that extended from the home interiors market and fashion runways into an ever more stylish and elegant outdoor furnishing and decor. On the color front, red, coral, wisteria and turquoise are four hues I’ve seen over and over at design shows across the globe in the last year. Runway inspired textile prints and patterns including gingham, lace and botanicals/florals influenced both outdoor cushion upholstery and fabrics as well as furniture frames. And one design trend of note is the influence of the contemporary art world on outside furniture styling – abstract, geometric, modern and sculptural where a few on show.
