A Tale of Pairs: Tableware Born of Love
Czechoslovakian designers Iva Tattermuschova and Jakub Stepanek’s 2013 Ambiente Talents’ tabletop exhibition was both captivating and evocative. They asked noted artists and designers to create a unique hand crafted and hand painted tableware product; be it a plate, bowl or crystal stemware, but there was a slight twist to the invitation. All contributing designs had to be part of a pair – a pair of plates, a pair of wine glasses, a pair of tea cups and so on. Then the final stipulation was that every submitted design had to originate from a real life pairing – husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend or life partners. Each of the pairings resulted in a mismatched tableware product as unique as their creator, yet in perfect harmony with it’s pair. The outcome was divine and the results were as they are in real life: two unique individuals with different personalities and characteristics joining to create a unique and beautiful set. One of my favorite artfully designed tableware pieces from Iva and Jakub’s company, De-sign is shown above. The hand painted plate is whimsical and pretty, yet has a nuanced dark romantic edge to it that seems almost dream-like.
