Find Your Decorating Style Confidence

Many of The Decorating Diva workshop students expressed how they often felt like they didn’t know what their decorating style was (or as some put it “whether or not they even had any style”). Of course those sentiments are understandable. Every day we are bombarded with images of furnishings and accessories in dozens of decorating styles with names such as “URBAN Chic” , Mid-Century Modern, Shabby Chic, French Country, Ameripean, and the list goes on and on. The differing decorating styles available to homeowners today clearly is leading to confusion, stress and to the dreaded after-purchase demon - regret. The very process of defining your own unique style when faced with so many decorating style choices can appear to be a difficult and seemingly insurmountable task. However, it shouldn’t be and I will show you how you can easily define your Signature Decorating Style.

First Things First

I mentioned a few decorating styles above and I am sure that many of you are familiar with most of those styles and probably several others and that’s wonderful. But what if I was to tell you that they aren’t styles? Yes, I know what the definition of styles is but I want you to break out of the mindset which conventionally defines the word styles. I want you to shift how you think and get ready because I am about to shake up your world.

Those decorating styles aren’t styles they are decorating recipes - plain and simple! That’s how you have to think about them. Style in it’s true sense is about essence - your personality, your lifestyle, that which makes you laugh - it is about all the wonderful pieces that make you uniquely you.

Shabby Chic “style” is not a personality or an essence it is a simple decorating recipe consisting of soft, overstuffed sofas, dainty feminine chandeliers and plenty of white linens juxtaposed with distressed furniture. As we all know some cooks can take a recipe, create the most flavorful dish that will have your taste buds dancing with delight while you’re grinning from ear to ear, singing the praises of the wondrous cook. Yet there are other cooks who can take the same recipe and make it ho-hum - it lacks flavor and presentation. As applied to the decorating world that flavor is your personality and when blended with an interesting decorating recipe it will result in the creation of a style all your own; your Signature Decorating Style.
