STYLE SKETCH STORY: The Why Behind the Idea
A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral. – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
As a young girl, my French teacher instructed me to read “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I learned two things – obviously, it improved my French comprehension immensely, but more importantly – it taught me to look beyond the common, everyday object everyone sees and to invite my imagination to see a world of my own making. I so enjoyed reading “The Little Prince” that eventually de Saint-Exupéry became one of my favorite authors, and I endeavored to read all I could by him. In the process, I amassed a nice little collection of my favorite quotes from his writings. The above quote always resonated with me because it divulges such a simple truth. That truth? It’s all about seeing what’s possible. It’s about refusing to be boxed in by what is expected or demanded by the rules or by what everyone else sees as the “norm”. It’s all about breaking out of creativity prison and allowing you to see the world unencumbered by the voices around you that say “no”, “you can’t” and “it’s impossible.” What I love about the world of interior design and home decorating is that it implores one to be creative. To push the boundaries of creativity and imagination. It is a world in which one is given permission to let their imagination see all the splendid things that can emerge from what everyone else sees as a pile of rubble and rubbish.
With the goal of embracing possibilities and encouraging creative artistry in design, we decided to create a new feature section, “STYLE SKETCH: One Piece. Three Looks.” In this section we take one piece of furniture or decor and create three distinct design concepts to illustrate how you can take just one decorative element and use it in multiple interior settings. And, as you will find, we look beyond a specific furniture style and mix it up letting our creativity and imagination and love for all things design guide us. We hope you enjoy this new feature and that it inspires you to nurture your creativity and imagination, and see the world of decoration from a whole new perspective.
