We fell in love with many of the vintage modern furniture collections presented by  R 20th Century at Design Miami 2008. Specifically, one of our favorite furniture collections was from legendary Portuguese born Brazilian modern furniture designer Joaquim Tenreiro (often referred to as the “father” of modernist Brazilian furniture design).

Here we’ve picked three of our favorite 20th Century  Joaquim Tenreiro chairs – visit R 20th Century to see more of his beautiful furniture design.

Dramatic Wall Tiles from Alsio Design

ceramic wall tiles from alsio design

Sample wall tiles in the Alsio Design’s booth at the 2010 International Contemporary Furniture Fair. I was captivated by Alsio Design’s silver and gold  metallic wall tiles shown above. The texture and coloring of those tiles are magnificent.

These red tiles, some with graphics and others with words, captured my attention.

Modern Bathroom Glam: Glass Wall DIY Install

Pin Wheel 3 FormWant to add a modern, luxurious glam design to your bathroom? Then replace the boring and Bathroom glass wall install after phototraditional dry wall with the look of  contemporary glass. Sounds hard? I used to think so until I came across a simple, yet thorough, DIY how-to from refurber.com regular, denouement. Before I jump into the details let me show you denouement’s bathroom improvement project. The photo on the bottom right illustrates the starting point with the bathroom wall framed out. The finished bathroom “glass” wall install photo on the top right illustrates the beautifully designed and newly installed “glass” wall.

I know you’re probably wondering, “Why does she have the quotes around the word glass?”. The answer is that actual glass is Glass wall surround for bathroomnot used in this project for two reasons. The first is that glass near a bathtub/shower area needs to be shatterproof which leads me to the second reason real glass is not used, it’s expensive to buy the required safety glass. denouement used a plexi-glass (ecoresin from 3Form) which has “self-extinguishing flammability for code compliance”.

Don’t think that you’re limited to colors and textures. 3Form has a breath-taking variety of styles and designs to choose from. Some of my favorites are shown below:

This look won’t work in all homes but if your home is contemporary in design and style then it’s definitely a natural fit.Learn how you can get this look at home -read denouement’s 5 Tips for Creating an Architectural Glass Wall.

Josephine Boudoir Stool from Spectrum West: Modern meets Classic

Josephine Boudoir Stool from Spectrum West

Feminine charm combines with modern styling to bring forth the Josephine Boudoir Stool from Spectrum West.  The acrylic frame juxtaposed with the rich brocade design signals the 2009 trend we fell in love with last year – Style Shock ( #8 from The Decorating Diva.com “Top 10 Home Design Trends for 2009”:

8. STYLE SHOCK: Gorgeous collision of differing, and, at times, clashing design styles give birth to new artistic interpretations of design, and mixed-media layered “mosaics” that are gaining popularity in artwork, textiles, decor and furniture – a nod to the craftsman/artisan influence on design for 2009. Caboche Suspension Ceiling Light in Amber

Caboche Suspension Light in Amber

The Caboche ceiling light designed by Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto in 2005 continues to work its design magic and has become a timeless modern design classic.

We love this modern styled chandelier as a natural fit in modern styled home interiors, and surprisingly even in classic traditional settings, specifically those wishing to mix the traditional with the modern. The Caboche suspension ceiling light is an elegant design element that can function as a style bridge between modern and classic styles.

Mixing Traditional Design Style with Modern Design

What to do when your home is furnished with traditional styled furniture and accessories, yet you’re ready to move in a different style direction all together different? That design problem is becoming more and more relevant as modern contemporary designed furniture and accessories with their clean simple lines and fresh color schemes fill the pages of home magazines, furniture showrooms and our favorite television shows’ sets. Naturally, we also want to emulate that look in our homes.

If money were no object then it would be easy to toss out the old and usher in the new modern design. But that’s not the case with a great deal of homeowners so the best option is to slowly introduce contemporary decor and modern styled furniture into the home. The big question then becomes, “How do I integrate modern pieces into my current traditional decor without it looking like a hodge-podge design fiasco?”.

Keep it simple and don’t over-do it are two key factors to keep in mind when mixing traditional with modern style. If you do that you can avoid the dreaded design style visual chaos which can occasionally result when decorating styles are mixed.

Start by introducing one piece at a time and get a feel for how it looks to you. You can add more design elements as you feel comfortable. Also keep in mind that the integration of modern contemporary style into a heavily traditionally decorated room may not blend well if you are working with two extremes; a traditionally upholstered Louis XV chair in proximity to a Herman Miller Marshmallow sofa, however that Louis XV might look wonderful residing next to a similar style chair with a modern twist.
