$1 Million Dollar Diamond Studded LuxTouch Tiles by Pietra Firma

LuxTouch diamond black marble tiles from Pietra Firma

We think even Lady Liz Taylor would be slightly green with envy at the above wall dressed in stunning diamond encrusted wall tiles by Pietra Firma.

LuxTouch wall, flooring and ceiling tiles are hand crafted with each individual black marble tile:

“ …inlaid with 95 brilliant cut diamonds, mother of pearl and abalone. The centre of the tile consists of a pitch-black agate circle inlaid with 19 diamonds and a mother of pearl flower petal pattern radiates outwards from the centre. Each of the petals is a single piece of mother of pearl inlaid with a large precious cut diamond and the black agate pieces between the petals are also inlaid with diamonds. The tile’s four corners are inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone shell, achieving a visually stunning counter balance with the radiating flower petals.

When inlaid, the diamonds sit slightly raised above the tile, which results in the maximum tactile and visual effect. Walking barefoot on a LuxTouch floor can only be described as a truly sensual experience. ”

The $1,000,000 price tag gets you one square meter of the LuxTouch tiles – calculated by number of gems and precious and semi-precious stones:  “over 1000 diamonds, 2400 pieces of mother of pearl, 400 pieces of abalone shell and 500 pieces of black onyx”. Take a look at the Pietra LuxTouch tile details shown in the image below:diamond marble tiles by Pietra Firma

At a million dollars per square meter the diamond inlaid tiles aren’t for everyone but Pietra Firma wants to redefine true luxury:

“In the 21st century world of brand extension, inbuilt obsolescence and mass market dilution, the word “luxury” has been diluted and overused.

TRUE LUXURY is not affordable, democratic, mass market, universal, brand extension or mass produced and machine made.

TRUE LUXURY is highly skilled craftsmanship utilizing rare and precious materials, a complete attention to detail, unique, personal, passionate, indulgent, exquisitely sensual, beautiful and artistic. This unique approach to luxury will satisfy the needs of customers who have a deep appreciation of the true essence of luxury.”

Annette Taylor-Anderson of ATADesigns

image Founder and surface design specialist, British born, Annette Taylor-Anderson set-up ATADesigns in 2005. She is renowned for her bold statement graphic designs as featured in the press and magazines, both in the UK and Internationally; Her designs break the boundaries of tradition, in true London style.

Over the last few years, she has developed cutting-edge print design collections featured as wallpaper, lampshades, cushions and ceramic tiles for the interior markets. She has worked with interior designers, and collaborated on projects as well as working with the individual.

Her design approach is always fresh and unique, and so there is always that element of anticipation, and excitement.

Annette first studied fine art before becoming a surface designer, so she expresses this through the fusion of art and design in her work, from her London studio.image

Tell us about your design business, ATADesigns.

ATADesigns stands for Annette Taylor-Anderson Designs. We are designers of contemporary wall coverings, ceramic wall tiles, lampshades, fabrics and cushions. Our aim is to deliver creativity, freshness and boldness into interior and exterior spaces. We work with some of the best manufacturers, to produce high quality products for our customers.

What inspired you to pursue this business?

I have always been interested in art and design from a very young age. When I was older, I used to paint, and show my work at art exhibitions. I suppose my interest in setting-up my own company came after my studies at University, where I studied Textile Design and Surface Decoration, and then I graduated as a Textile Designer. I’m very passionate about design, and I love to see people enjoy my work in their homes and interior spaces. image

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

My Inspiration comes from all kinds of things, people and places. I especially love derelict old buildings, building sites, cranes and giant machinery. I usually carry a camera and a sketchbook in my bag to record ideas for future projects.

What’s your personal design style? Has it evolved over time?

My personal design style is contemporary, bold and graphic, with an artistic flair. I would say that my design style has evolved, and it is forever evolving. I love to experiment with hand-drawn, painting, photographic and computer work. I now have many design styles. Not all of them have been shown as yet.

Many of us have a product we bought for our home-that now makes us think-”what was I thinking” -  do you have one?

I don’t really have anything, but my husband bought a huge bookshelf once, and he thought, “yeah that would look great in the house”. When I came home and saw it, well, you could say that I was not happy. It did not fit the living room, it was too big for the room, and the style did not fit, I had to get rid of it quickly. Say no more…..

Describe your dream room.

My dream room would have to be a very large room or area, where I can best display my designs on the wall. A giant mural, a little bit like a large painting. The colors of the room would have to be light, and clean, to compliment the mural as the main feature. The furniture would be simple, not too fussy, and contemporary. This could be in a large house, hotel, or large interior area.

image

Ollie & Nic Leather Bag:  I recently bought this bag, it’s so spacious, enough to fit all my bits and bobs, including my sketchbook. Dolly Mixture Sweets: Since working on my last project to design the Dolly Mixture wallpaper, I can’t stop eating the sweets. Sammy Dogs: A friend of mine makes and sells these little Sammy Dogs. She gave one of them to me as a thank you gift, they are so cute. Graffiti Image: I’d taken this photo while at Covent Garden, London. I don’t know who the artist is, but I think it’s great! Baby Tomatoes: I love eating baby tomatoes, especially when they are ripe and sweet. Wallpaper Book by Charlotte Abrahams:  Fabulous book, featuring great wallpapers.

Tell us about a favorite design project.

image

I actually have two favorite projects. I’ve just finished designing wallpaper and greeting cards for “Sweet Tooth”  a new sweet shop recently opened in London. The wallpaper is based on “Dolly Mixtures”, which brings me back to my childhood days of eating those Moorish sweets.

image

Then, towards the end of last year, I collaborated with an upholstery company called “Urban Upholstery”, and we presented “Ore” a pair of nursing chairs that had been rescued from the street, and re-designed by Urban Upholstery using ATADesigns fabrics, for their showroom.

image

I also had a large wall to decorate, and so I designed an eye-catching mural. That was very challenging, but it did give the showroom the “WOW” factor.

What’s your favorite color or paint swatch?

image My favorite color at the moment is the 2010 trend forecast color, Pantone Turquoise (Pantone 15-5519 TCX), and its everything that Pantone says it is: “Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world,” Pantone claims, “while at the same time restoring our sense of well-being.”  (More on Annette’s favorite color, Turquoise, from Mark Sinclair at Creative Review.)

I have not used it in my designs as yet, but I will do soon.

What are your five favorite pieces of home décor from your home or elsewhere?

image

My five favorite pieces of home décor are:

  • I love works by Piero Fornasetti and this room divider is great!
  • Huaras rug by Christopher Farr, I love his rugs, and this reminds me of abstract art
  • Chandelier Mirror by Accent Designs – This beautiful mirror was an unexpected gift to me, and sits on my bathroom wall.
  • The “Lucrezia wingchair” by Urban Upholstery – The colors and fabric in this chair are amazing, the impeccable upholstery is of a very high quality, and although this is a traditional chair, it also has a modern twist to it.
  • The “Beryl, Mavis & Coco” sociable spiral sofa designed by Marnie Moyle – I actually sat in this sofa at Decorex, London, and I must say that it is very comfortable and very sociable you can fit 3 people in it. I want one of these in my home.

What’s your favorite room at home? Why is it your favorite?

My favorite is my living room. Its the first room I go to when I kick-off my shoes to relax, it’s my haven. This was the first room we decorated when we first moved in. It’s a contemporary room, with soft calming purple-coloured walls, decorated with my abstract paintings, and contemporary furniture. I love this room

Who are your favorite designers?

  • Piero Fornasetti – He was a genius, he had great design style and now he’s an icon. I’m really blown away by his works. FANTASTIC!
  • Timorous Beasties - My all time favorite designers from Scotland, their work is incredible.
  • Kelly Wearstler – Very bold, I would love to work with her to see how she would use my designs.
  • Adrienne Chinn Design – I love her versatility, and she is always up for a challenge.

As a design professional, is there a design tip you’d recommend to other designers?

Listen to the person you are designing for. When working with a client, find out as much information as you can about what they want, their likes and dislikes, their budget etc. Do they have their own ideas, images, drawings or themes to accompany their idea(s)? Gather detailed information, do lots of research, plan everything, use drawings and swatches, take photographs of the room or space. With all this information, you will start to build a picture of your client’s vision.

Regina Garay of Garay Artisans

imageRegina Garay launched Garay Artisans, an Orlando, Florida-based decorative painting and faux finishing firm, in 1998.  The company is owned by Regina and her brother Jason Rosales, and since its launch has grown into a respected and creative team of decorative artisans. Their fresh approach brings a client’s vision to life, marrying masterful techniques with beautiful color combinations. Their experienced team of artists are distinguished by their superior reputation and service.

In the 2008-2009 year, American Painting Contractor awarded Garay Artisans the Grand Prize in their national competition, the Top Job Awards.  In the 2009-2010 year, they won the Top Jobs National First Place Award (commercial division) for their work in the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Asheville, NC.  In addition to their private commissions, their decorative painting and antique mirrors have found their way into the following beautiful locations, among others: Orlando International Airport, Hilton at Walt Disney World Resort, The Bohemian Hotel at Savannah Riverfront and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel (Universal Studios).

In 2007, WFTV, the Orlando-based ABC affiliate and Central Florida’s most watched television station, chose Garay Artisans as their Local Expert for Faux Finishing and featured the firm in their newscasts and website.

Regina also pens the Fauxology blog and is happy to be active in online forums and social media.

image

Tell us about your  business.

Garay Artisans started as a decorative painting firm out of my garage. When the paint materials started taking over my home, we secured a nice studio space. This studio space has enabled us to branch into hand-crafted wallpapers and antique mirrors, both which use all our decorative painting skills. Those we can produce on site and ship around the world. It has been a creative blessing to have a space to call our own and go home and enjoy our individual personal spaces as well.

What inspired you to pursue this business?

The business was a “true love” situation – I was exposed to it by a roommate who was a film set designer, and it was love at first sight. I knew this career was “The One”. The Fauxology blog started because I talked about faux and design incessantly, and it was driving my family crazy. To save those relationships, I started writing down all my observations, and the information I came across as blog post. Blogging was an amazing and cathartic solution. It floored me when I received my first comment, who knew I even existed?

image

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

My favorite is to go to the library and sit for a few hours perusing their research books within the design categories. I will do this even when I travel to other cities and write down the book information to order from my own library. I nearly dance to the local library when they call me to inform me that my inter-library loan book has arrived. Inspirations from different designs and textures come together from this research. I then purchase the books I can’t live without and have those in my personal library for reference.

image

Tell us about a favorite home decorating or remodeling project.

A lot of the work we do is in the hospitality industry (including hotels, boutiques and restaurants). We recently won a national first place award for the work we did in The Grand Bohemian in Asheville, NC. I’d pick that as my favorite project because it reiterated the value of teamwork and how important it is to adapt to changes quickly and gracefully. We did both antique mirrors and decorative artwork for the project – two months work of mirror patinas, glazing, fine cabinet work and gold leafing. The best part is that I find weddings pictures online that were held in the hotel, and I see people having the time of their lives in those spaces. It’s surreal and yet so magical. So, definitely a favorite!  image

Regina dishes on her favorite things (from left to right): Margaret Braun Cakes – Oh, my…I’m sensing a theme to my likes.  Ms. Braun creates extraordinarily artistic cakes.  She uses a beautiful blend of colors and design styles. Marcel Wanders – The product design and interiors are sleek and paired with serious design sense and a touch of whimsy.  Delicious. Maya Romanoff – It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Mr. Romanoff’s papers.  Their quality, consistency and artistic value are beyond sublime. I met him once — it was a happy moment in my life. Laduree – Not anything to do with interior design but their artistic bakery creations have always inspired me, color-wise.  Plus, who wouldn’t love to sit and enjoy their macaroons? Paulin Paris – I love anything left of center and I love the artistry of Paulin Paris.  I wonder what he would dream up artistically for my home if I were to hire him.

What’s your favorite color.

I’m not loyal to any color for any length of time — I have no shame, LOL! Currently, Antique Copper from Modern Masters (image ) is my favorite. In our new antique mirror patinas line, we have created an aged mirror with an allover damask pattern and we’re using that color for the samples. It creates such a delicious tone through the mirror – I just want to eat it!

What are your five favorite pieces of home décor from your home or elsewhere?

I don’t know about five-my husband and I bought our current home in 2005 and we thought “We’re going to buy grown-up furniture now”. Out went the hand-me-downs! If I do love anything in our home, it’s all our furniture from the dining room to the master bedroom. Some of the furniture pieces have crocodile texture, others are elegantly distressed. I adore them all. image

What’s your favorite room at home? Why is it your favorite?

I like the master bedroom. I asked my husband what color he wanted brought in and he said “Black”. (Inwardly, I said “Oh, no!” but, I had already opened Pandora’s Box.) I set about creating an accent wall with an ebony luster-like plaster as a base and had bamboo drawn on it with variegated gold leaf accents. The rest of the walls have the same luster-like plaster in a neutral parchment color. I still haven’t tired of it and my husband loves it. I should set up my bedroom one day and photograph it, since I keep talking about it.

Who are your favorite designers?

I do like Kelly Wearstler’s style. I recently saw a show featuring Thom Filicia, Richard Mishaan and John Saladino and they did incredible work. Also, I do so love Albert Hadley, his designs are timeless. Someone stop me!

What’s your personal design style? Has it evolved over time?

I think my style has always been quirky and colorful, somewhat bohemian. I believe I’ve stayed true to this style for some time.

image

Many of us have a product we bought for our home-that now makes us think-”what was I thinking” -  do you have one?

I wish I would have put more time thinking “overall picture” before picking the fabrics for my window treatments.

Describe your dream room.

I would use inspiration from the set designs of Tim Burton’s films and add a dash of residential elegance to all that quirkiness. I very much like the unexpected, but I don’t like venturing into weird. I hope I’m making sense!

What are your favorite blogs or home design/improvement websites?

  • Art’s the Answer – Theresa Cheek is a fellow faux finisher with a degree in art history.  I love how her posts combines her expertise in the decorative arts, and seamlessly mixes in her knowledge.  It’s a blog of beauty and precious information from a wonderful person to boot!
  • Color Buzz -  The Beehive Studio brings their considerable expertise in color and techniques, and mixes it up with history and charm.  I love their photos and suggestions. This site is perfect for pros and DIYers alike.
  • Design Inspiration – Helen Morris writes from England with wit, verve and a beautiful design touch; all revolving around her amazing stencil company and life in Europe.  The images alone would lead me there every day.
  • Home Workshop – I’m a monthly contributor to this blog that’s all about design, decor and achieving the perfect look for your space.  Kathy Barlow, the site’s Chief Design Junkie, always makes sure there is ample information, great images and even inspires her readers to create something beautiful via her ongoing challenges.
  • Sara Baldwin Design – Sara runs an incredible mosaic company and is a superb artisan and businesswoman.  She has such a great eye for beauty and design. It’s a pleasure to read her blog and find out all about her life, her business and the gorgeous art of mosaics.

image

What are your favorite books, design shows and/or magazines?

  • Magazines: World of Interiors and Phoenix Home & Garden.
  • Books: Anything published by Rizzoli.
  • Television Shows: I do appreciate the shows Ovation Television airs.

Do you have a decorating, design or remodeling tip you’d like to share with The Decorating Diva.com readers?

If you have two colors that are not working together, add a bit of each to the other and they will start taking on elements of each other. They will start working together like magic. And one more – never be afraid to paint the fifth wall: your ceiling. Even a creamy neutral makes such a difference. Life is too short for white!

Maybelline Te’s Style Maker Look Book

MEET MAYBELLINE TE

maybelline Te metro society 045_2 Interior Design was my primary career choice. But coming from an entrepreneurial family, it was de rigueur to have a business degree (Bachelors in Business Management, University of the Philippines). After a full time six year stint with the family furniture manufacturing company in Cebu, I went to The Art Institute of Charlotte for my Bachelors in Interior Design and graduated last June.

I love what I do and I’m thankful for everything that I’ve been blessed with. My work is my passion so I’m lucky that my interests and work intertwine harmoniously. I take pleasure in travel, art, museums, books, good food, jewelry, and fashion.

As Creative Director of Snug Furniture, a modern furniture company launching in May 2010 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (Snug Booth number is 1154), the focus is on starting up and getting prepared for our launch.  Living the adage “to whom much is given, much is required”, Snug aims to launch a charity program espousing proper education of less privileged children in the Philippines. After all, a good education is a basic human right.

Snug Furniture is a collaboration between my business partner and me. We both grew up in the furniture business and met at a furniture showroom. If people had each other at “hello”, we had each other at mortise and tenon joints. We appreciate traditional furniture and remain attached to family heirlooms and antiques, but wanted to introduce some modern styles to refresh the look and reflect today’s eclectic lifestyle. We are working with other designers and also coming up with our own. Starting up in this economy makes us more cautious so we are approaching it grassroots style. With our combined manufacturing and retail experience, we plan to offer medium to high categories to the interior design trade and would be thankful if a few retailers would pick us up.

The Frou La La blog was born about four years ago on a tropical night in the hills of Maria Luisa Estate Park, I was mindlessly turning the pages of a coffee table book to the sound of the cicadas. A ruffled hot pink tulle skirt emerged from the page and all I could utter was, “froulala!” (frou frou + ooh la la = froulala) (Continue reading more about Maybelline Te)
