The Love Affair with Blue Continues

Throughout history, the color blue has enjoyed intense popularity and it looks like that love for blue is still burning strong as color industry leaders are signaling that variations of blue will reign supreme in everything from runway fashion to home fashion.

Pantone’s 2020 color trend report crowned Classic Blue (a deep, dark blue) as the color of the year. According to Laurie Pressman, this shade of blue is, “a color that anticipates what’s going to happen next. What’s the future going to bring as we move into the evening hours?”

Color Meaning: What do Blue Hued Colors Symbolize?

The selection of Classic Blue as the 2020 Color of the Year, as defined by the Pantone Color Institute, happens to coincide with the start of a new decade.

This isn’t the first time Pantone assigned a blue-based color to define not only a year but the beginning of a new decade. The idea of a blue-based color serving as a transition point between the old and new – saying goodbye to one decade and welcoming a fresh beginning in a new decade occurred in 2010.

In 2010, Pantone declared turquoise, a blue-green shade, as its color of the year. Pantone explained that turquoise combines”the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.” In that sense, choosing the color Turquoise was the ideal chromatic symbol defining the opening of a new decade that brought with it the promise of hope – a fresh beginning after years of a devastating global financial recession.

Will Blue Continue to be a Popular Color for Home Decorating?

This year, and in the coming years, you can expect a resurgence of a wide-ranging palette of blues – from classic navy blue to blue-green and every divine blue color mix in between.

When I was reporting on the home design luxury textile trends emerging from Proposte, the Italian textile fair, I noted that blues had a very strong showing – almost eclipsing other colors. I also noted that strong influence at Milan’s famed Salone del Mobile design fair.

Where Can I Use the Color Blue at Home?

Blue is probably one of the easiest colors to use in home design.

Blue, in its myriad of variations, is truly a classic color whether its a true blue interpretation or one that leans toward the blue-green color spectrum or towards the blue-red color spectrum.

The darker interpretations of blue can have the visual read of a neutral color and, as such, these types of blue colors can lend themselves as an appealing color option that can be applied beyond furnishings, decorative accents, and wall color – as can be seen in the popular rise of blue-hued kitchen design and bath decor.
